Poll Question
What do you guys think is the best way to find good coins?

What is each method best suited for? Roll searching would be best for errors, variants, and common coins of course. But is it easier to find silver and very old coins through detecting rather than roll searching?

Poll Choices
 Roll Searching
 Metal Detecting
 Combo
 Some Other Method

I do both, however here in Washington it rains so darn much that on days I can't metal detect I roll search.

I will say this, too; It depends on the person. My grandpa could go out detecting with his old Garrett and within an hour or two come back with some silver coins. I could go out for the same amount of time and find nothing because I'm not nearly as good with my machine as my grandpa is with his.

On the other hand, I can search a box of halves/dimes/nickels/cents much faster than my gramps...so I guess it all evens out in the end.

I have to say that roll searching is better. However the oldest coins I have came from metal detecting, some silver some not. You can find all sorts of things roll searching, but I bet you will never find a Doubloon or a Cob while doing so. With metal detecting you will also find jewelry of all types if you are in the right place.

Metal detecting is somewhat related to my coin collecting but I keep the coins separate from my "coin collection".

I have my coin collection, comprised of finds from roll hunting and purchases and I also have my metal detecting coin collection.

How about silver though?...from my experience you're very lucky to get even a silver Rosie and quarters are even rarer although not unheard of. Some people say they go to boxes without finding a silver coin. Is it just easier to break out the detector in this case?

note I'm under no illusions that I'll get rich off silver but I'm curious to know what method is better.

If you do metal detecting in a banks vault, you would almost be guaranteed to find coins. If you roll search in front of a metal detector, again, you would find coins. Either way both are OK.

Don't know where you live, but if you can detect along beaches where the people hang out you can go after stuff like silver, gold and platinum rings. You sell those and you will be well-funded when you enter coin shops/shows to fill holes in your collection.

Basically true but parks and forest could give better results since if people drop a coin there, they sort of just vanish.

Like everything else, depends on how much time and effort you put into it. I got into detecting and roll hunting 3 years ago, and each year I find hundreds of silvers coin roll hunting, and I've found hundreds of silvers + old coins detecting. I do get the quality with detecting, over the quantity roll hunting.
When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors...
Roll hunting since '77
Dirt fishing since '72

When its all said and done I get alot more enjoyment out of metal detecting. Sitting in one spot gets old quick.
