As some of you know the US Mint is releasing a new Commerative Silver Dollar celebrating the 100th anniversery of the Old San Francisco US Mint. For people who don't know about this program you can visit the US mint website and find out about it through this link http://usmint.gov/mint_programs/com...on=OldSFMint Does anyone think this Silver Dollar will be popular? If so why? Do anyone think these will sell out fast? Opinions are recommended. Eric Edited by Eric Kreszl 10/15/2006 5:33 pm

I suspect the sellout isn't even in question. Today's market is pretty feverish, with new customers and ebay resellers dueling like hungry piranha over these new issues. I'll either get in on the initial issue, or I'll wait a year or two for the feeding frenzy to die down and prices stabilize.

Well The main reason I bought it was because of the design and the fact that it had the Morgan silver dollar Reverse on the reverse of the coin itself. CONSEDERING TODAY'S NUMISMATIC MARKET IT WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE FOR ME TO BUY A PROOF Morgan silver dollar AND THE FACT THAT PROOF Morgan silver dollars WERE NEVER STRUCK THAT GOOD TO BEGIN WITH. Eric

Well, put me down as someone who thinks this issue will fall flat on it's face! There just aren't that many coin collectors who will make this a profitable purchase. I will admit thinking of buying one but put my money in DCarr's silver Denver Mint commemorative coin. For design and beauty the San Fran coin cant even hold a candle to this coin. So time will tell, and I hope no one looses to much on this issue.

Based on the sales numbers posted weekly in the Numismatic News, I'd say there appears to be no danger of a sellout for the silver or gold issues. Probably not a popular theme, judging by the sales so far. I ordered them to keep my sets current, but a happy thought is if the issues fall flat, the prices will do better in the aftermarket due to the lower mintages

I agree. Probably later the Collector Value will go up due to the mintage figures.

I doubt there will be a sell out. With all the excitement about the Buffalo and silver eagles set, no ones talking about the SF commem and the legacy set.

shatsi, I'll bet after the coins are actually put in the public's hands (sometime in December 06), we'll see a lot of noise about them, particularly the "Legacy Set" which will be in high demand after issue. Berry

And who knows what uproar will be created once they start going on ebay. That seems to be driving the frenzies these days. Hey! My 100th post!

I have been keeping away from all commemorative coins. I go to about 3 coin shows a month and have noticed not much of a market for any of them. I dumped all the commemorative coins I used to have and barly came out ahead of what I spent for them. Unless you just like commemorative coins, my suggestion is forget it.

Just Carl has a point... I do keep my set of modern commems current for the reasoning that if someone had bought one of the eqarly commems as they were issued, what would that set be worth in high int state today? I realize there are a lot higher mintages of moderns in most cases, but a hundred years from now who knows what a legacy like that might be worth?
I do know what an expensive proposition buying coins for my early commem set is!!!
