I cannot find an explanation for where sometimes the 1 Jiao coin 1999-2003 has chinese characters on it exclusively, and sometimes it is virtually the same coin but with written language. At first I thought the ones with written language were some sort of foreign exchange certificate coins, but it is still in Chinese, so that doesn't make sense. Any help would be appreciated.

Never mind, the coins with Chinese characters only were actually Japanese characters and 1 Yen.

There are two different series of coins in China. Ones after around 1999 and those before 2001.

Ones before had the chinese state symbol with tiannemen square on them, while the other ones have flowers, though both are quite boring!
