Hi,

Just acquired this 2 escudo gold coin from someone which found it using his metal detector (6.74g, about 21mm).
I'm having issues figuring out which king / mint this is from (between philip II III IV ... not sure about the mint because of the circles in the shield side which are stuck to the cross border, plus the border's design)

Can someone enlighten me about this coin's details ? (and value - although I'll get a nice idea with the details / the catalog I got)

2-Escudos---Which-King-/-Mint-?
2-Escudos---Which-King-/-Mint-?

I also have a similar 1 reales, found in a similar way - I'm almost sure about the king of that one though, plus the mint (sevilla) is visible.

Thanks,
Mathieu

I was wondering how to figure that out.
The shield design should be a bit different (although Philip II and IV seems to share a very similar design)
The cross side guided you to the Seville mint of this king ?

Thanks !

What about that one ?
I IDed it to 1 Escudo Sevilla from Philip II (because of the number of flowers in the escudo)
Am I correct ?

Yes that it's Philip II 1556-1598 Spanish 1 Escudo but is 22 mm or it's less.Looks cliped and that means less than 22 mm

More about the first coin
At the time the ship went down, she was loaded with 26 bronze cannons,
650 souls and over 35 tons of treasure. This coin dates to the reign of Phillip IV.
Seville Mint. A great historical coin.

Yes, the escudo is a bit underweight / clipped.
18.3mm
2.63g

The 2 escudo looks great :) Would be better with a date/mint though, but those are even more scarce.
It was found in France here : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loudun

Thanks for the informations !

Hi,

Was looking again at the 2 escudo, and I'm still not sure it's from philippe IV.
That king had another piece on his shield design on the top part (escudo of portugal if I remember well) - and that one don't.

What details make you think it was from Philippe IV ?
