Hi: I have a sealed RCM bag of 1963 Canadian Pennies. It's driving me nuts wanting to open it. 2 questions: Is it worth more sealed? 2: Will they still be nice and bright, or will the air going through the cloth bag have dulled them? Thanks.

I've opened two bags of 1963 cents in the last few months and the thing that struck me was just how many had big black fingerprints all over them! It must have been Kentucky Fried Chicken day at the mint when those cents were being minted.

The only thing that I found out of the two bags were "hanging 3's". You may have better luck, like finding a double strike or a capped die cent.

It's up to you whether you should open it or not. I don't know how much of a premium a sealed bag of '63's would bring. I bought mine for 2X face and resold them for the same price once I removed the "hangers".

Well, I opened the bag and the only thing I found was the same black fingerprints and one clipped coin. No hanging.

1963 is a bad year for varieties, compared to 1962 and 1964. Unless you find striking errors in the bag, it is probably worth more as a sealed bag....

I'm curious how, nearly 50 years later, there are still so many bags around?

By my calculations 98% copper cents are 143 to the lb of copper. That is CAD$1.43 face value is about CAD$4 of copper.

A dealer at one of the local shows had half a dozen or more. I bought one 1964 (the only one he had) and three 1963's. I pulled a bunch of varieties and a nice error out of the 1964. Essentially nothing out of the 1963's.
