Chris22, it's possible that you have a counterfeit piece, as Krause notes that this piece was an "unauthorized strike by a mint official". However, if it's one of the genuine 30,000 pieces struck, it's worth $350 in VF condition, more if in better condition.

Ricardocody - are you sure that you have a 1954 5 pfennig piece? Krause doesn't show that any were struck with that year - although some surely were with the 1950 mint date - as Krause shows that mint dates jump from 1950 to 1966. However, as obsolete coinage (brass-plated steel) it's probably worth under fifty cents.

There are two kinds of 50pf coin dated 1950G: the scarce type pls mentioned has the legend "BANK DEUTSCHER LANDER". The common type has "BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND" as the legend and is only worth 50 cents in VF.

Right, only 30,000 pieces of the "Bank deutscher Länder" type (which was supposed to be issued with the year 1949 only) but note that there are manipulations around. After the Federal Republic of Germany was founded, the country name was put on the coin instead - and that coin is much more common: Since it was minted with a frozen date between 1950 and 1965, there are more than 66 million pieces from Karlsruhe (G mintmark) alone. All these pieces can still be redeemed, so it has a value of €0.26 ($0.38) at least. ;)
