I am having a terrible time dating Iranian coins. I am translating the dates and, for example, have come up with a date of 1252, which I have reversed to be 2521.

From research on the internet (?!) I have discovered that I should subtract 559 from that, giving me 1962. Sweet.

Then I use Numismaster.com and NO coins come up in the year 1962 for Iran. Am I deficient in my history and Iran was not Iran in 1962? There are no coins listed for 1976 either (a different coin)?

Somewhere I am making an error, please help me I have many of these coins.

Can you post a pic of a sample coin?
It's easiest to guide through the first example.

What you probably have is SH 1352, SH+621=AD, 1352+621=1973.

MS(Monarchial calendar system) dating(25xx dates) started in 2535. 2535-559=1976

Iran used three different calendars on its coins during the 20th century. The earliest period (up to AD 1926) Iranian coins used the same lunar calendar the rest of the Islamic world uses. From 1926 to today, Iran has used a solar calendar. For most of that period, it was a solar Islamic calendar where Year 1 dates from Mohammed's flight to Mecca in 622 AD, but for a few brief years (1976-1978) Year 1 was the accession of Cyrus II, founder of the ancient Persian Achaemenid Dynasty in 559 BC.

You don't need to "reverse" Arabic/Persian numerals. While it is true that Arabic/Persian writing is read "backwards" ie from right to left, Arabic and Persian numbers are written or spoken in full in the opposite order to English. Whereas we would see the number "1352" and say "one thousand three hundred and fifty-two", the literal translation of the Arabic would be "two and fifty and three hundred and one thousand". The two opposites cancel each other out, meaning Arabic/Persian numerals can be "read" by Westerners as they would Western numerals, left-to-right.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis
