I just sent a 1838 large cent to NGC for grading. It came back as an MS64 BN. I didn't have the variety identified and was wondering if it really made any difference for that date?

that must be a awful nicen to grade that high, I am not sure about the varieties in the large cents catagory because I have just started to get interested in other coins besides Morgans but I would guess that some varieties would be worth mors than others just like the Morgans are. If you ever intend on selling this beauty you have there please keep me in mind because I bought a 1831 in a NGC holder but had the Reiver pedigree and was going to crack it out to put in my type set dansco folder but dont want to do that and lose all the history connected with the coin so I am looking for another nice example to replace it now

Welcome, SoHumble ...

There are 15 varieties of the 1838 Large Cent, and the rarities range from R1 (common) to R6+ (very scarce) and some are quite valuable to Large Cent variety collectors. If you can provide large high-resolution photos, some of us might be able to identify the variety for you.

If you wish to try yourself, I strongly suggest you obtain "The Cent Book 1816 - 1839" by John Wright. It is the best reference for the middle date Large Cents, IMHO.
