That is strong enough to cause pitting in copper if left unteated and prevent the formation of the nice patina we see on these coins. Given a choice that this toning was caused by a gas or a liquid, I'd tend to think gas. Of course I wasn't there, so they might have painted by elves for all I can prove. I don't mind you or anyone else having an alternate opinion on anything.
