I purchased a fine selection of International and USA gold 1oz coins way back in 2000 to 2001 ... and have been holding them since. Gold was $250 - $280 an ounce back then ... wish I had purchased more. Anyways ... I've decided now is the time to sell some ... I'm planning to sell 10oz at my local dealer to fund some coin purchases. Sooo ... would appreciate your input on my 2001 1oz Gold Panda ... is this just a bullion coin or does it have numismatic value above base metal? I purchased the Gold Panda in 2001 in a plastic holder that I recall the dealer stating included the 'COA' as it were from the Chinese government. This coin alas suffers from a very minor bag hit on the Panda forehead ... I say MS69 if grade means anything to bullion coins. Photos .. Appreciate any advise ... do I dump this as bullion or is it worth a Numismatic premium? Thanks David

Pandas have always commanded a premium but it appears the rise in gold price made that all but disappear. APMEX bid is $1566 for a 2001. There was a time when it could have brought $100+ over spot, but you're better off now. There are counterfeits, so the COA is a nice thing to have.

OK, I read the gold bid price as their bid price for the coin. Looks like there is a really nice premium on pandas still. I see a 1999 for $1900, 2002 for $2400. Haven't seen a 2001 yet.

'99 and '02 both had lower mintages than the 2001. In '99 they made 32000. In '02 they made 29000. In '01 they made 41000. I have yet to find a price for your coin though.

I would try to sell it for at least $1600 before dumping it for melt. Pandas have a loyal following and you might find a buyer for a bit over melt.

Also, check on ebay and see if anyone there is selling a 2001 Panda and what it is going for. Might give you a better idea of its true value.
