Hi,

I just want some feedback on the grade of this attached coin.

I am hoping that this coin might make a MS level but am unsure.

Please be specific insofar as what feature(s) keeps it from going to the next highest grade.

Finally, one can notice the slight doubling around the obverse forehead and nose as well as on top of the Eagle on the reverse.

I believe this appears as a result of the scanner's light. How can this effect be eliminated?

Thanks for your help.

Yes it should go MS. The poor Ike dollar. It's large size makes it a good target for hits while bouncing around from place to place. The hits
may lower the grade but they do not change it's wear factor. The reverses of these coins seem to be in better shape than the obverses.
Maybe it just seems that way because of the more detail involved on it
than on the obverse. Look at the hair, eye and ear for wear on the obv.
Check the rev. on the detail of the earth, the moon craters and both wing and tail feathers. Also look at the coins reeding. You have to also take into consideration die state/stage. After looking at a few gazillion of them you can spot an MS pretty quick. I san a lot of my coins. Sometimes a scan works better than some pics. but most of the time it does show the depth as well. Try using different color paper
on your scanner bed instead of just laying the coin down on the beds white surface. You have to experiment with the colored papers as some colors work differently with different colored coins ( i.e.: copper, silver, gold, clad, nickel etc. Play with your resolution settings also. Takes some time but you can get a pretty decent idea on grades etc. The exact color matchup is hard to get though.

Indian,

Thanks for the input but I need some clarification from you regarding using different color paper on my scanner bed.

As it is now I just lay my coin face down on a clear glass surface where a scanning light runs underneath it to extract the info. for the scan.

Before I begin the scan I close the top of my scanner's covering lid to cover the coin completely. This fold-down cover/lid is white and is the only part of the scanner that I think your are referring to when suggesting a change in the color.

Are you suggesting that I tape possibly blue-colored paper, for example, on this white surface before putting the lid down on top of the coin?

Please explain.

thanks,

There is no need to tape anything to the scanner lid. Simply place a piece of black paper over the coin before closing the scanner lid.
I find this helpful as well.

OK, I am now clear as to what I need to do ref. the color change on the scanner.

I do, however, want to further drill down to exact what level of MS this coin should be classified as; please shoot me your opinions.

thx,

I just love seeing Eisenhower dollar posts!

Unfortunately, scanner are notorious for making coins, especially MS coins, look dull and flat.

Only a good photograph will provide the detail necessary to give an reliable grade; and even then the accuracy is affected by the limitations of the photograph. I know this is not what you want to hear, but it is the best I can offer you at this time.

Regardless, it is a good looking coin as I see it.
