Hello everyone, very cool forum.

I'm new to coins, so here is a quick question straight away!

I have bought a Hungarian 20 Korona online. Everywhere I look it says it should weigh 6.7750g, but the listed weight from the seller is 6.09g. He's adamant that it's original, and not a restrike.

So... should I be worried?

Also, I've learnt that the restrike date for the Hungarian 100 Korona is 1908. Is this the same date/year for the Hungarian 20 Korona restrike too?

Any advice/help appreciated... first real steps into proper coins... I've even bought a scale and micrometer!

Thanks.

The restrike should weigh exactly the same as the original. The Mint which produced the original, also very probably produced the restrike as well.

Restrikes are not forgeries.

First off, make sure of what the seller is actually saying. These coins are .900 fine, so while they have a net weight of 6.775 grams, they contain 6.0975 grams of gold. The seller might simply be trying to inform you of the actual bullion content.

If 6.09g is the actual weight of the coin, however, then yes, I'd be worried. Losing 10 percent of a coin's mass is not a subtle difference, nor would it be within a mint's tolerances for gold coins. A genuine coin that had lost that much mass should be severely worn, or perhaps clipped or holed, or have some other clearly obvious explanation.

Thanks to all for the warm welcome!

And thankyou for your help and advice so far. I was thinking about this last night and what Sap says seems to ring true regarding actual gold, as opposed to actual mass weight... i'll have the coin soon so will confirm either way.

It's probable that I've just made the most basic of mistakes when first starting collecting!

Jacob:

Sap has a valid point, I think he is right.

6.775 g x .900 fine = 6.0975 pure gold.
