I just picked up 12 Ike dollars from an estate sale. The dates range from 72-78. I know that some Ike dollars have silver in them, but I'm not sure how to tell if they do or not. If it does have silver, will the rim look all silver like a 50 cent piece? Thanks for any help.

Very few Ike dollars contain any silver, less than 5% of the total minted were silver clad. In 1977 and 1978 none were minted with silver so those dates can be eliminated. For the earlier dates the only ones with silver in them were minted in San Francisco. If your earlier dates have an "S" mintmark above the date at the base of the neck, they could be silver clad.

The best way to tell is to weigh the "S" mintmarked pieces. Copper-nickel clad pieces weigh 22.7 grams and the silver clad pieces weigh 24.6 grams. The rim color will not be conclusive. Good luck!

BH1964,

The best way is definitely by weight. The Silver clad coins weigh substantially more than the copper/nickel clad. 24.59 Grams versus 22.67 grams etc.

*Also, look real close at any 1974D and 1977D Ikes- the U.S mint made a few in Silver Clad by mistake and these are worth thousands of dollars!*

All 1971 & 1972 S Ike's are Silver Clad.
Any Ike's you have that have an S on them after 1972, weigh them if you are not sure if they are Silver Clad or Copper Clad.

With the exception of the rare 1977D error, as mentioned above, all 1977 and 1978 are non-silver.

Silver or not, a good find in my book!

Yes, I am biased towards the Eisenhower dollar.

Another test for silver is the tissue test.

Still a great find, if it silver or not silver. I remember finding my first Ike dollar in a cash register when I was cashier back in 2008.
