Picked this up a while ago at a yard sale for 15$. After some research I think it's a forgery. Opinions?

TheDepreso I agree with you 100% in that I think it is a counterfeit. Nice one and the price is perfect in my opinion. If you ever want to sell it - I would gladly give you $15 for it. I do not own one like it.

TheDepreso I guess your question really is - AM I CRAZY - to be willing to spend $15 on a forgery?

Well, for a fellow like me who collects counterfeit coins and writes about them, that is actually an average kind of price for a forgery that might be useful to teach a lesson.

Your coin has a split in the plated surface. That factor makes it interesting. I am interested in how old it is and how it was made. I would also like to know if the counterstamp was executed on the completed host or if we are simply seeing a transfer copy of an original that had the Guatemalan C/S already on it.

The process used on this forgery superficially resembles the old Sheffield cold plating technique (similar to that used on Roman Forees.) If it is Sheffield it is one of the latest applications of the technology that I am aware of. If it is a "Modern" Sheffield attempt, I would also like to know that as well because it means that Modern forgers could start manufacturing older style forgeries to glut both sides of the market.

Yes, the crack is indeed interesting. It's like a layer was cracked, not the whole coin. Also, the photo doesn't do it justice. It looks very much like silver, I thought so when I was buying it. Also, it's well struck and the toning is quite convincing. Too bad it's magnetic :(
