I was looking at a well circulated 1899 silver British Trade dollar in G, with three chopmarks.

The odd thing that hit me was... whenever we handle coins, just how much metal do we take off the coin? 1 microgram?

Here's a picture of my coin in G and a reference same year coin in XF
for comparison

This coin must have circulated through two million hands to go from XF to G! now that's a lot of hands!

The proportion of metal lost due to wear is less with larger coins. There is more surface area relative to mass with smaller coins.

I would guess that about 2% to 3% of mass would have been lost with the Trade dollar in 'G' condition.
