I had a moment of passion buying last week. I saw this coin listed on ebay and I have wanted an example from Bukhara for some time - so I bought. Now I want to find out more about it! I know that is not the best way to buy but, hey, sometimes you just do it! Here is what I believe I have but I would love either confirmation or clarification.

KM70
Bukhara
~16mm
3.18g
Silver

What I don't know is which of the dates listed in Krause I have. Is this the 1301/1299, the 1301/1300 or the 1301. Clearly I can see the 1301 but since the picture in Krause is so bad (and actually doesn't even look like my coin) I'm confused. I know there are varieties so not having a matching picture doesn't bother me or should it?

So any help on this would be greatly appreciated

I think the date is actualy 1351 (or possibly 1251) - the "0" is read as a 5 in arabic

It was my understanding that this is a 0 and not a 5 as there is some note in Krause about the 5 being more of a J (or open 0) in some cases. It cannot be 1351 as Bukhara didn't exist (it was gone) in 1351. And that second digit has 2 humps/points making it a three as best as I can tell. But I'm open.
Perhaps this is not a Bukhara coin at all? Could that be? and if not Bukhara, what might it be?

Your coin is indeed from Bukhara, and 1301 is the correct reading for the date.

Ordinarily, Bacchus would be correct about the reading of a numeral shaped like a Western "0". But in Bukhara, things were a little different, and "0" often really did mean "0". The Bukharan "5" often resembled a letter "J".

Here is a zeno.ru example with the same date; on this example, one side has a standard Arabic dot-sized zero, the other side has the local O-shaped variant.

Bukharan coins usually have the date on both sides - and sometimes, the dates are even a couple of years apart! - but the other side of your coin is so far off-centre that most of the second date is off-flan; all you can read is the "13".
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

thank you Sap. I need to look more closely to see if it indeed a 3 or a 2. I didn't realize that was a partial date. If it is a 3 then part of the question has been answered. It is not /1299. Of course if it is a 2 then the answer has been completely answered. I don't have the coin in front of me at the moment.

I took a look at this closer last night and I'm thinking the partial number is indeed a 1 and 2.
Sap, for my edification (and hopefully not my embarrassment LOL), the partial date is on the tail end of the 'swoosh' - right? If that is the partial date, I don't see a second 'hump' on that second digit. I suppose the second one could have been a weak strike and has since been worn away. I have only a 10x magnification but I don't see it under that.
