I try to put together a "real UNC" coin collection. I figure the easiest and least expensive is to buy Mint Sets and cut them out. To my surprise the 1982 and 1983 Mint Set are very expensive. Will that cheaper if I buy separate one by one? Is there any other Mint Set or Proof Set that carry premium? I may have to buy separate too.

As far as I know, there were no mint sets produced in '82 & '83. You might be seeing a set someone assembled and is calling it a mint set.

there was an after market set offered that resembled the u.s. mint sets, and they used to be very inexpensive, but are valued around $20+.

There were no official P&D Mint Sets issued for 1982 and 1983. What does exist for those years are the individual souvenir sets that were available at each Mint's gift shop. A set had one of each coin from that Mint in addition to a bronze Mint medal. These sets are quite expensive and you would be wasting your money by purchasing them to cut apart- the whole is worth more than the pieces. There are a number of aftermarket sets available but keep an eye out for quality as many of those sets contain coins of lower quality. To get the best 1982-83 coins possible, I recommend purchasing individually.

If you're only after UNC coins, it'd actually be cheaper to buy a complete 1959-up set from ebay for $30 or so. Most of the mint set coins are of no higher quality than "regular" cents.

Thanks for the advises.
biokemist6: To get the best 1982-83 coins possible, I recommend purchasing individually. That is what I am going to do, unless BadThad idea is better. BadThad: What you mean by 1959-up set for $30 or so? I would like to know.

I had a pair of souvenir sets from 1982 and 1983, they had some sort of foil insert for the year and mint I think. The coins were poor examples and the cello was a bit rough. I sold them on ebay as is with good pictures and they got a lot of money anyway. I think like $50 for one and $75 for the other if my memory serves me right. This was about 5 years ago. I don't miss them. I think it would be neat to assemble a 1982 and 1983 set and be really fussy about the quality of your coins. It would probably pay you back in time.

Just a heads up: Watch the inclusions and exclusions on the ebay sets. The example Scooby gave only has 2 out the the 8 1982's. Complete does mean complete even when describing regular strike sets. Of course the Proofs and SMS/Satin are not included either but these can be bought as "complete" sets as well.

If my calculation correct and exclude all the 1982, 1983 and small dates and types, I paid around twice face for all my UNC and proof US modern coins since 1965. I think, I am going to save a lot of money buying Mint and proof sets. I haven't finished yet, but around 60 to 70% done. I am using last year Grey sheet and refuse to pay higher than that list. I just started going after silver proof sets too. I already killed the 1999 and 2009 for under my old list price. It look like they are not adding value even though silver price was higher.
