I decided to post this list in a new topic although it could rightly go onto the Sticky "Recommended Sellers". The ebay Numismatic Sellers Registration Board (ENRB) was started this past spring as a means to "certify" coin sellers on ebay by volunteering to subscribe to a code of ethics. It hasn't taken off as it should, mostly due to lack of promotion, but each seller must subscribe to a code of ethics and behavior which then gives him/her the right to post the ENRB Logo on their auction sites. It's an ebay group, but has expanded to a Yahoo Group in the event ebay ever starts censoring the group as ebay has been known to do; there have been a number of ENRB posts very critical of ebay, but so far, no censoring. The URLs for the different groups related to ENRB are in the text. This list is of those who have applied and been accepted for Registration; there are about 250 persons who belong to the group although most have not become registered. There's a few ebay identities listed of CC members including "thefred2" (moi). I also encourage CC members to get themselves registered on ENRB, a painless exercise consisting of joining the ENRB and posting a message in the appropriate topic. It can't hurt and might do some good in the battle against internet (especially ebay) fraud. FWIW, in a post on CC this past spring, there was some grumbling about Alan Van Arsdale who started the group; since then, several moderators have taken over the group and Alan mostly sits on the sidelines or conducts administrative matters such as the message posted below. Fred The ebay user "barnowlc" has sent the following message to the group: ebay Numismatic Seller Registration Board
from: barnowlc to: ebay Numismatic Seller Registration Board http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ENRB/
Hello Group, The list of ebay user ID's of ENRB registered dealers is at the bottom of this post. On numismatic groups we are often asked for lists of reliable dealers. The ebay Numismatic Sellers Registration Board (ENRB) is an ebay hosted numismatic board which can be found or joined (all are welcome to join the board) here http://groups.ebay.com/forum.jspa?f...ID=300013802 ENRB registered dealers agree to abide by the boards ethical standards which can be found here http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CoinF...essage/18465 ENRB registered dealers also agree to abide by ENRB decisions, which are provided free, in case of disputes between ENRB registered dealers and their ebay buyers of coins, exonumismatic items and bullion. Future versions of the list of sellers will include what type of coins each seller offers. There are many reliable numismatic dealers on ebay who are not on the list. Thanks, Alan Van Arsdale

Unfortunately, ebay fails to see that it is its own worst enemy and that despite its protestations to the contrary, fraud abounds and flourishes in its auctions, particularly among coins. It even abets fraud by its continued failure to abolish auctions in which the bidders identities remain private thus facilitating fraudsters such as estatedoctor. Small wonder that ebay's stock continues to remain in the toilet rather than outstripping most other stocks as it did in earlier years. I finally became disgusted and dumped my ebay shares. I don't see ebay cleaning itself up in the near future and thus regaining trust among investors. Fred

Thank You for the information on the ENRB. I just joined and hope that more sellers do. I love to have a place to proclaim a strict code of ethics and above all customer satisfaction. I agree ebay itself is it's worst enemy, they have grown to a point where they cannot police themselves. The more policies they make, the more problems they create. The sad part is they are not in sync with the buyers or sellers. Tried to use their Help section lately? It needs HELP!!!

Which Help section? I have a number (maybe 30) different Help sections bookmarked including ebay's Site Index and ebay A to Z and it STILL takes me what seems like hours to find what I'm looking for. Presuming I ever find it...

Fred, have you cosidered offering them a private forum here? We could do that. No one would even see it unless a moderator added them. It's pretty simple. The moderators that are in place there could be made moderators of the private forum here. I think it would be awesome for them and for us. We would add a lot more knowledge to the pool here, and they would enjoy non-existent ebay censoring. Now would be the time to do it, before it gets too big!

No, I hadn't considered that. I think I'll think on it awhile since there's a little confusion in the ranks and I'd like to see how it sorts out. Right now, they seem somewhat disorganized, albeit with very good intentions; the ENRB Yahoo Group hasn't really gotten off the ground and has only ten members. Nevertheless, when I get a chance, I'll contact the moderators and Alan Van Arsdale (the group founder and person responsible to ebay for the group) and run it by them to see what their reaction might be. If we get enough CC members to join ENRB, we can take over. And maybe get a good idea to snowball.

I'm a member of the Group, but haven't started taking an active role yet. As you said, Fred, it's still sorting itself out. I really don't want to add to the cacaphony with my own agenda.

I think if we can get the word out and with encouragement more CC members will join. Maybe we can have a enough power to get noticed. We have the worthwhile cause, the desire and the others will follow. Let' try and let The Good Guys Win.

In some sense, CC has more of a diverse group in terms of collective knowledge on a wider range of coin types and series than does much of the ENRB membership (317 members). There is a definite tendency on ENRB to favor ancient coins and coin forgeries as opposed to modern and "recent" (18th and 19th century) coins; this is due to the founder's expertise in ancient coins which naturally drew in others with similar interests.
I would certainly feel a lot more comfortable with a larger number of CC members within the ENRB membership list before approaching the ENRB moderators with any proposal. Still, three of the 27 officially registered ENRB sellers are CC members (kanoftuna, bishopgoodie, and thefred2 [moi]), at least of whom I am aware.
