Since I'm thinking about looking through half dollar boxes the amount I'll have to dump will go way up. Unfortunately in my travels I have seen only one coin counter in the open besides the ubiquitous coinstars and it is in a credit union that is only open to teachers/family and a guy is stationed right next to it. Before I begin I'd like to get as much info as possible.
Any institutions known to have free counters in the lobby around So. Cal LA/Inland/OC?
How many dump banks would be good and how often would you dump at each?
In general does halve searching eventually led to major/minor confrontations/attitude and/or account termination or is that unlikely?
Do you bring them in rolled or loose?
Even if you collect and dump at separate branches is there a risk of a higher authority (like some district manager) noticing and taking action against you? If so how would you avoid this?
Is it possible for a bank to refuse a dump?
Is it easy to dump at a place where you don't have an account?
How likely is it to be shorted significantly or to get a significant amount of lesser/fake coins?
Any tips for preventing or knowing when/if tellers look through your box first?
Any tips to minimize annoying bank employees?
Specific thoughts for ordering/dumping at BofA/Chase/Wells Fargo?
General tips?
thanks Edited by jarwulf 05/03/2011 7:29 pm

I was open and honest with my bank from the start. They have a counter that I get bags from and I dump them on Wednesday because they ship to the Fed on Thursday. They also call when they get extra bags and just the other day had saved some silver nickels for me.Their policy doesn't allow the tellers to go through coins for themselves...but it's ok to help customers...I like that policy. I also buy a box of chocolates now and then as they cannot accept any monetary gifts.

lots O questions I get 1 box of halves a week I dump this and other boxes of different coins before next weeks order I return 2 boxes to a bank a time and attempt to spread out which banks get which coins as best as possible I reroll all of my coin because it is the way my bank takes the coin back I return them in the box I got them in coin counters I guess could work but if your bank doesn't have one you are out of luck Be up front with the tellers, ask them what they would prefer you do if you show you care about what they want they might help you out and not be mean ask what days are good to drop off, or what times little things to show them you want to make their job as easy as possible when dealing with you will help if you go in with an attitude you will leave getting one back have fun and good luck

Best thing is to have two banks... one for dumps and one for buying. Try to find a bank that takes coins back without a fee and a bank that will sell you boxes or CWR's without a charge too. It also help if each bank you use gets there coins from different providers. Like the bank you buy from gets Strings and Sons rolls, and the dump bank uses brinks. Good luck with your search

To answer your questions:
1. I don't know the area, but TCF bank near me does unlimited coins with a counter as long as you have an account.
2. One dump bank with a few branches nearby
3. Very unlikely in my experiences so far
4. Depends on the bank, my dump bank has many branches near my some have a coin counter and some don't so I have to bring in rolls.
5.I don't see what they could do other than tell you to stop bringing in coins and then you take your business else where.
6. I am not sure
7. You need an account or know someone with an account or you will be charged a fee
8. I assume you mean when dumping and I like to count my coins before I take them back so I know if it shorted me and I tell a teller
9. Just make sure it is sealed and the oly thing they could really check is the ends of the rolls unless there is something I don't know.
10. Know what days that teller has off and go in on those days, or just wait untill you can see a different teller or go to another branch.
11. Never used those banks.
12. Don't overdue it. If it is abused they may make a rule of charging for coins or dumping.

I dont have any fees for getting boxes or taking them back another thing I do is only ask that they order the half dollar box for me my bank has so much change they are happy to dump it on me When I go to the counter the telller says "hey I have your halves and we can do a box of everything else except pennies" I ask him if a box of this and that will be all right with him and he gets me what he can the whole don't be a royal pain in the butt is my strategy I mean I am all ready making the guy carry me 4 boxes of coins from the vault to his station I guess I want to make everything else as easy as possible on him plus if I order too much I am affraid I will kill the golden goose dont get greedy, you can ruin it for yourself fast!

Thanks for the answers, a big fear is that some bigwig might somehow put together that I'm ordering from one branch and dumping at another and ban me from all branches like one or two people have claimed. But I guess thats not too likely.
Do you guys bring your halves back in the original box and rolls?

You're being way too methodological. Just jump right it, the water's fine. You'll learn as you go (swim? ) along.

At least where I live, I can dump my coins for free at some nearby banks, and I'm not even a member there. I just bring them in loose and dump them in.
I guess another alternative is to roll them and give them to the bank, because they won't charge you that way. Banks offer free rolling paper for you to use.

Start small, be nice but not creepy and don't over think it. Almost any other advice anyone can give you is useless because of different circumstances.
