I recently got this coin at a local coin show and after examining it I noticed the scape marks along the bottom of it.


Question....scrape-Marks-On-A-Pontus-Amisos Question....scrape-Marks-On-A-Pontus-Amisos

At first I thought it was post mint damage on the coin I bought. But after looking at some other, similar coins, a number of them have these same type of marks.

Does anyone know why?

I don't see these marks on other coins.

I am just curious about this.

I can only assume that it is something to do with the flan production at this mint. Perhaps the flans were roughly filed before being struck. It looks like the filing was performed on the flan rather than the die. I have an imperial denarius which seems to show filing to the die, which I assume was to remove rust that had appeared on the die but I am not sure it helps here.

It might have also been caused by improper cleaning with a dental tool.
