Termites eat millions of Indian rupees in bank
AP

-- Fri Apr 22, 5:53 am ET

LUCKNOW, India -- It was an all you can eat buffet at the bank.

An army of termites munched through 10 million rupees ($222,000) in currency notes stored in a steel chest at a bank, police in northern India said Friday.

The bank manager discovered the damage when he opened the reinforced room in an old bank building on Wednesday, police officer Navneet Rana told The Associated Press.

"It's a matter of investigation how termites attacked bundles of currency notes stacked in a steel chest," he said. The money was put in the chest in January.

The termites had damaged bank furniture and documents in the past.

The police have registered a case of negligence against bank officials in Barabanki, a town 20 miles (30 kilometers) southwest of Lucknow, the Uttar Pradesh state capital. In India, police register a case before opening an investigation.

Is this the fate of all fiat currencies?

I think that someone around had friends among termites.

Look, what a perfect robbery: to get a few bundles of notes and then let termites in!

Yea,it doesn't say whether or not there was a pile of paper dust left behind. I never thought of the robbery angle but it is an interesting one.

The residue was probably a mix of paper dust and termite p00. Yuck!

It does make me wonder how those little guys got inside a steel chest to do the damage, though.

Does this mean that these Rupees were "terminated"?

The printer's ink in some old notes contain heavy metals, notably antimony. I can just imagine some of the junior termites complaining to their leader:

"We don't feel too good, boss!"
Rest in Peace

I would guess they look more like swiss cheese than sawdust.

Reminds me of the story about the bully army sergeant who took first dibs on packages from home.

One day they got a box of electronics full of popped corn for cushioning.

He commandeered the packing, and felt pretty good about himself until he ate down to the notice that it had been treated with rodenticide.
