I have a 1970 Half dollar with NO reeding. Are there two varities to this year, or is the lack of reeding a known error? If it is an error, how common?

Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge

The lack of reading will be some type of post mint damage in all likelihood.

However, I would love to be proven wrong, please post a picture so we can diagnose it.

I get a couple of pixs up tonight. I'm fairly knowledgeable with coins and someone would have to been very clever to grind down reeding. But knowledge or not, I can be fooled and will appreciate your opinions

the cause is more than likely wear from circulation...

I see two possibilities here. Most probable is damage- many half dollars have had the reeding worn off from usage in slot machines. Half dollars simply do not circulate long enough any more to naturally wear down the reeding. One sign of a slot coin is that it will be covered in bagmarks, I have seen dozens of half dollars like this so it is not uncommon.

Less likely is the chance that you have a broadstruck coin. A coin is struck using three dies- obverse, reverse, and collar. The collar defines the diameter of the coin and also applies the reeding. No collar= no reeding but it also results in a coin with a larger than normal diameter.
