Hi,
One of my younger cousin really showed an interest in collecting coins and money. I'm wondering what the best way to start would be. I don't want to buy fake stuff and I'm guessing there's a lot of that on ebay. Is there any good starter books to get someone started buying and looking out for fakes? Is it best to buy for the gold or silver value and use that as a way to decide if we should buy if we're buying from friends and family(some have offered to sell stuff they've had over the years). I have no clue how to guide him into this type of endevour, but he wants to start buying with his own money and I don't want him scammed. I do plan on finding someone we can trust at one of the shows, but on ebay or in person I'm not sure how to do that.

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Just have him buy a roll or two of pennies, nickels, dimes, whatever, and get a Red Book. That should be plenty of fun to begin.

If he's young and really just starting, you can get a decent number of types of coins for cheap if you're less concerned about quality. I noticed you're in China so this won't be as much help, but in the US you can buy pretty much any type of coin going back about 120 years for not much more than it's melt value (if it's silver) if you're willing to go with a more worn condition. Obviously they won't look as nice as an uncirculated coin - but it'd make for a good start.

Go to the Whitman web site. They are now offering a Starter kit for new collectors for, not exactly sure, about $29.00
It contains the main thing a 2012 Red Book, lots of those 2x2 flips, a box for those and other starter items.
The main thing to do to start is as already noted and just go to a bank and purchase either rolls or a bag of pennies. Also, you can get rolls of Nickels since they are probably the easiest to find coins needed for a collection.
For now stay far, far, far away from ebay and/or other web sites for coins unless you really know what your doing.
A great thing to do for any beginner is to look up coin shows in your area. Go to Google and type in Coin shows.
Also, try coin clubs since they sometimes have coin shows but are not large enough to make Google.
