I just made a photo "booth" for taking pictures. I am using a Sony Cybershot 16.1 MP digital. I am still playing around with the lighting, and settings. I am having a real hard time getting proof coins to come out the way I want them.

The next three pictures are of the same coin. The first two, I took at a slight angle to prevent a reflection, But I think it captured nice detail. The third better showcases the actual luster, but I cannot get away from it reflecting me or the camera. Taking them from farther away and zooming seems to blur the image.

Tips Please.

I WISHthere was a magic formula for high luster coins. They're one of the most difficult to shoot. I think you're a lot further along than you give yourself credit for. The 1st two look great. You are capturing the luster with detail. Only thing off is the color and if you can play with the white balance, think you may have it.

It would be cool to be able to tilt the coin at various angles so that a full 3D effect of the lustre is achieved, and pack it as a .gif file. Would that work?

This one had the additional annoyance of being in a slab - but I photographed it at an angle...

i also was using a sony cybershot and found that natural light helped A LOT bringing the luster out...i was taking pictures of proof eagles, pandas, etc....so I know what you're going through trial and error is all you can do....once you find the best spot outside you will be able to slam the pictures out, but keep in mind as the sun moves so do you haha it gets tedious

Yes, only a camera.

The light is a 9" circular fluorescent kitchen fixture that I painted matte black, cut a hole in the center and stuck the camera through it. It kills the luster of business strikes, but brings out the best in cameo Proofs.
