Hi,
I inherited this Iowa National Guard/ Mexican Border Patrol Coin from my late father. He was born in 1899 and was a WWI veteran. Pretty old for a man who fathered twin boys in 1967 huh?
Anyway, I am wondering about the coin's history, age/date, or rarity, how it was produced/given out, etc. Anything anyone can tell me about it would surely help. OR, if someone can point me in the direction of a book or more resources. It looks to be copper and bigger than a half-dollar, but slightly smaller than a Morgan dollar. Thank you very much for any help -- Troy

Troy ... pleased to have you here.

I have no clue on your medal ... it is not a US Mint coin ... but I enjoy the design and look forward to what the experts have to say.

Perhaps you will get better opinions in another part of this great forum ... we'll see if the Mod Dudes can show up and place your post in a more appropriate forum.

It's clearly an award medal of some kind - the large vacant space on the wreath side is intended for the engraving of a recipient's name; it looks like the recipient in this case (presumably your father) chose not to have his mane engraved.

An ebay search came up with this item, an identical medal, only with a loop and ribbon attached, being sold for $145. A google search of the exact phrases "Iowa National Guard" "Mexican Border Service" came up with a first hit a very large PDF download with the following text as an introductory paragraph:

Quote:
Iowa Guardsmen were mobilized in June of 1916 for Federal Duty on the Mexican Border to stop the raids into the United States by the Mexican rebel leader Pancho Villa and his troops.

The National Guard from many states including Iowa was on the USA - Mexican Border 1916-17 to prevent more cross border raids by Pancho Villa's bandits. The medal was issued on a ribbon but this one must have been used as a pocket piece for many years.

The Mexican-US border has always been an interesting place. The Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) has recently published a very good book covering all the medals issued by the various states and the Federal government for service on the Mex. Border from 1911-1917. The Iowa medal is shown on the front cover. Since I can't post pictures or links here yet just look up OMSA on google.
