Hey everybody!

Today I found someone willing to trade me 3 1oz Canadian Maple Leafs and 1 1876 Half Crown for a box ($100 Face) of pre 1981 Canadian Nickels. I was just wondering if anyone had some information on the Half Crown. I'm new to coin collecting, and even newer to anything other than Canadian coins. I'll post pictures when I can, but I would say this coin is in very fine condition.
Thanks in advance!

From Collectors Coins GB 2008:
Number minted: 633,221.

Value in Pounds: F: 30, VF: 60, EF: 170, Unc/BU: 350.

I have an almost complete type set of British pre decimal coins George 111 to Elizabeth 11, F to Unc., mostly common dates. British coins were the staple coinage from 1825 until 1909, in Australia. I am surprised that only a few Australians collect this series, because it is such an important part of our numismatic history.

Thanks for the info Sel!
Would 1876 be an uncommon date with such a low mint number?
I'm liking these pre decimal coins, I'm going to have to start diverting attention/resources from Canadian Nickels to more stuff like this!
Rest in Peace

I'd take that trade. It may be years before you can get full value for the nickels.

wmd: The values quoted in my reference are typical for half crowns of other dates in that period.

The series is well worth collecting, with Great Britain at the height of her Empire.

The half crown would have been the most commonly circulating large value coin. Crowns did not circulate much, because they were cumbersome. The double florin is interesting, and was not popular with the public as well, because it was too close to the crown in size.
