Hi,

My wife recently inherited a coin from her grandfather and the only reference we have been able to find to it is here (and that is only a picture):

http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...PIC_ID=13864

Any help for information would be much appreciated. We aren't concerned about value, but more the story behind it. At this point we know nothing about it.

Thank you!

First, welcome

These are mint medallions, they are made in nickel and in copper. I think there are two or four to the set, I have them somewhere, I'll find a couple tomorrow and post pics. Normally they were acquired during mint tours and came in capsules.

Value? Not really very much, I think I paid 10 bucks for 2 copper, 2 nickel versions. They don't seem all that common though, you're only the second person I know of that's ever asked me about them.

I don't know much more than what Ugly said. I have come across them in dealer's bargain boxes with other medals/medallions and don't think I've ever picked up any (I may have though and just don't know where it is). I'll check some more, as they are rather nice.

You guys are great. Any more info would be appreciated but this is a great start!

So essentially this is a souvenir from the mint? Is there a specific year they were minted? Are they always available? Can you only get it from the mint in person?

Thanks!

Here's another thread which some informatiom. As for what year, they definitely started these in late 80's. As far as I know they produce them whenever they want to. They come from the gift shop at the RCM, they may also be available at the boutiques. They were never sold via mail (and now online) in my recollection.

I believe it is a product of the Lomardo Mint, not the Royal Canadian Mint. This is the same mint that produced the Sudbury 'big penny' tokens and nickels.

First, . Yes, these are medallions that can be purchased at the gift boutique at the Winnipeg Mint. I do not know if they are available at the Ottowa Mint, but I would assume so. When the wife and I did the cross Canada tour four years ago, we stopped at the Winnipeg Mint. I mentioned this a couple of threads ago, so you would not know this. This is a copper encapsutlated coin. You could also get a quarter dollar coin I believe by putting in a loonie, if I remember correctly, and the machine would punch out a quarter with the maple leafs on one side and either the Queen or the Mint on the other side. The floor would just shake when the machine punched out the coin. Loud too. The Medallion is more of a keeps sake, not sure if there is any real monitary value. Nice coin though

The Lombardo mint doesn't list nickel as one of the metals they work with. I have two of the nickel versions as well.

As an FYI, the Royal Canadian Mint has been manufacturing highly regarded medals, medallions and tokens since the early 1930's. Here's a bit of info on our web site: http://www.mint.ca/store/mint/about...kens-5900002

Hello,
I also have the same coins from these mints, Ottawa on one side and Winnipeg on the other. Four of them have some weight to them and are silver in colour and are encapsulated in plastic. One is in a blue case and is gold in colour, also encapsulated in plastic. It is definitely not copper. Any idea of what the gold one is about and what it is worth?
Thanks

like this one?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Royal-Canad...em43b30beae9

or these:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/RARE-ROYAL-...em1c21fabf71

btw, debbies asking prices are usually about 3-4 times market prices. No real idea on the worth or the metal composition. Likely bronze.

I saw them at RCM's Vancouver boutique, around 7 dollars each
