I bought these two coins a while back and had a lot of fun researching them...These guys were true frontiersmen in every sense of the word, but, made a few mistakes which led to their demise!!I think they should be greatly admired as,they were much like Lewis and clark in spirit

the standard reference on B&W is "Dig" by Frank Clune. I read it a long time ago. Most of the icons of Australian history have been re-appraised recently, so I won't be surprized of some new scholarly work on B&W appears soon.

Their role in the greater scheme of Australian history is poorly understood: they weren't just explorers, their expedition was an attempt by the government of the Colony of Victoria to stake a claim to vacant land on the north coast of Australia - where I now live.

BURKE is the subject of ill-deserved derision, based on his alleged inability to navigate, even on well-formed roads in Victoria. In fact, he got "lost" whilst visiting a lady-friend, and he decided to put the story out that he was "lost", rather than just being AWOL.

this is a good summary -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burke_...s_expedition

You'll see in it a reference to William Landsborough. When I drive from Darwin to Melbourne (it still takes about 5 days in a modern car, on modern highways), over 1,000 km of the journey is on the Landsborough Highway (formerly National Route 66; now A2). It has an austere beauty ... I'll dig up a pic for you, if you like.

There are some good stories of American exploration as well. I guess all Americans know well of the Lewis and Clark expedition. As an Aussie, I have fun looking at the American expeditions of discovery also.

I guess Lewis and Clark have been celebrated on coins by the U.S. Mint.

Australia has parallels to the American experience, at least happenings at the same time:

The discovery of gold at Suttor's Mill = the discovery of gold at Hill End,

The discovery of gold in the Klondike = the discovery of gold at Kalgoorlie.

Gold has been worked continuously at Kalgoorlie since it was discovered.
Google the 'The Super Pit'. I have been there, at midnight. It is a major tourist attraction, the mine is in operation 24/7.

Peter..Yes,I would like to see a pic,If possible

sel_69l...I think there were many similarities between the US and Austrailia in the way they both grew up and both had there share of characters such as Ned Kelly and jesse James!

I would really love to see Austrailia, but,Im not really up for a 12 hour flight

A couple of years ago, I was inside the Eldorado Canyon Gold Mine. It's about 30 miles Southeast of Las Vegas, and operates as a tourist attraction only these days, although the mine is still far from worked out. This site has been used as a movie set on a couple occasions.

The ore body is up to two metres thick, and dips at about 70 degrees relative to the horizontal, much like the 'banket' ore body in the Witwatersrand region of South Africa.
