I think that if I'm going to spend money on a coin no matter how scarce it also has to be attractive. That dime is not attractive imo. It does appear genuine however.

I can understand what you are saying, yet, how is a VF coin supposed to look? I see so many Canadian coins that have been cleaned that seeing a coin that appears to be original is a plus. Most of the coins that I have seen from this year have weak 3's - but this one is so strong. That I suppose is were my concern lies with authenticity.

At the time of writing this thread, my time was 12:10 p.m. Atlantic time in Canada. I checked the "ending " auctions for the last 24 hour period on E-bay and could not locate any VF 1893 RT dime. There is one being auctioned by sid_123, however, it is only a G-4, but the RT3 shows nice for a worn piece and it appears authentic. I recently purchased an I.C.C.S., 1889 dime, F-15 from Sid. What a beauty! Glenn

Congratulations! What a prize - I can't imagine that there are that many that grade higher. You got it below bid in VF. Post a picture once you get it - it's something to share if you don't mind.

I am envious, the RT3 in VF still eludes me. I second the picture request, I couldn't find the listing either.

The reason you cant see the listing is because its available to US customers only, so I had to whip out my US address for this one. Here is the link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...TRK:MEWNX:ITI am pretty excited and will be shipping it off to PCGS asap :)...will post pictures once its back. Hoping for VF30 on it and fingers crossed it doesn't come back in a body-bag lol.

WOW, I'm sooo impressed (& a bit jealous) that someone walked away with that Beauty at such a great price! Good catch to whomever won it, congrats!. Coin would grade at least a VF-30 and if not for that facial rub on the Queen's cheek, it would make an I.C.C.S./C.C.C.S.>EF-40. Coin like that is better than having an R.R.S.P., even the I.C.C.S. Population Report would place it among the Top 20 best known. I've never seen a three soo sharp and clear, it is probably a first strike and pulled out of circulation soon after. Due to the gorgeous charcoal grey toning this coin has and no pitting/corrosion, it must have been stored in a dry location with a lot of natural sunlight. It's usually the only way silver takes on this type of toning over a long duration of time. If you ever wanna sell, you know who to contact!! (wink, wink) Glenn

Thanks Glenn...I feel better about the purchase now...lol... When I started the bidding at $800, I wasn't mentally ready to pay $2400...but kept checking Trends and with VF trending at $4000 and EF at $7500...I figured $2400 isn't that huge of a risk :)... Looks like the seller runs a pawnshop of some sort, so keeping fingers crossed the 1893 RT is as good as it looks...:)

Very nice "3". The ex-Belzberg is an AU-53 (IIRC) and the three is no stronger than yours. In my opinion, the RT3 is one of the top five "real" collector coins to own in the entire Canadian series, congrats!

awesome example of a rare variety
1cent, what other coins would you include in the top 5 'real' collector coins to own from the decimal series?

kitkat: it's hard to say for sure, but the 1889 10 cent, 1875 25 cent, 1890H 50 cent, and 1947ML C7R 50 cent are some of the top contenders for my list. They are genuinely tough to come by, and decent collectible examples can be bought in the neighborhood of a couple thousand to a few thousand dollars.
I appreciate the dot '36 coins, 1911 dollar, 1921 emperor/prince, '16C sovereign as much as anybody, but I don't consider them within reach of the average collector (the 1921 5c may be, but it's still not what I'd call affordable), and for that reason I group those type of coins separately.

I'd throw in the 1906 25c small crown, 1965 5c large beads, and 1870 50c no LCW into a list of top 10 :)...

When your collecting Canadian dimes getting either the 1889 or the 1893 round top in my book are the holy grails. Both very tough to find in a decent condition. I just happen to like the dimes.

I love dimes also, and with a Passion! take a HARD look at the 1892 , Large "9" Dime. I strongly feel this is a highly underrated/undervalued piece of Canadian Numismatic coinage. Fortunately I have an I.C.C.S., VF-30, Obverse #6 that I will take to the grave with me. And no, I won't disclose my burial site, 'cause I just know you dime luvers will dig me up for my booty!
