Hi Berry-- No, he never did although I had sent my question directly to him as requested. This is the second time he's stated he would answer a question directly, but didn't. Not a good omen, but I can understand how easy it is to let a difficult question work its way to the back burner. I have a few difficult unanswered emails sitting in my Respond box . https://goccf.com/t/8256I go to the Jeep doctor on Thursday. Meantime, the new radiator I had installed in August to replace the leaky new radiator installed in May is now leaking, so I may be at the Jeep dealer's shop for a little longer than expected. This will be the third new radiator since May. Mopar's quality control needs some work. Fred

Yes, in fact. Plastic, as well. I've had two Grand Cherokees, and they've both needed radiators at 100k miles. Just did the second one a couple of months ago.

Hi Fred, what your probably getting is a "re-built" radiator"--I sure do hope you are not doing that or asking for that to save couple bucks--Always ALWAYS request for a NEW radiator--I will never except anything less--If you except a rebuilt, all you are doing is getting a rad trhat was already "damaged' and is already garbage to begin with--If new, now that is another matter--

Wish all you Jeep owners would lighten up a little. After all, when winter gets here and it goes down to -50 your problems are solved. No more leaks!

No, these are out-of-the-carton brand new OEM Mopar radiators. At least at 700 bucks a whack, they better be new! At least I didn't have to pay for installation of the second radiator since it was covered under warranty and, presuming it's a defective new radiator again, I won't be paying for this one either. However, I will recommend York Jeep of Prescott, AZ as the best Jeep dealer and service shop I have ever encountered across the continent. I have a list of those I will not recommend, but that's for the Jeep forum. I have received nothing but cheerful and competent professional service from York. It's not their fault Mopar has had a run of defective radiators.

I am driving a 2001 Grand Cherokee with 110K miles and it's been the best, hands down, of any car I ever owned. This is my 5th Jeep and I've been buying primarily Mopar products for about 25 years with a few Toyota's and Nissan's thrown in the mix. My only true lemon was a 1988 Dodge window van. It spent 4 months of the first year of ownership in the shop. I appealed to Chrysler to replace the Truck. No such luck. I bought Toyota's for the next few years and then went back to Mopar (Jeep's). I love this Jeep. It's been off road a lot and never babied. It has a 4.7 Litre V-8 and gets better fuel economy than any of the 4 Litre sixes I had in the other 4 Jeeps. Good luck with the new radiator. What a PITA! Mike P.S. Congrat's on the MS66 Morgan sale!!!

Morgan Fred, Get your repair shop to check for "stray current" in the radiator. If you have any bad earths in the electrical system, electricity can build up in the coolant and eat the radiator. As a spare parts man for 28 years I have seen many cases of this, sometimes the radiator is eaten out in a matter of weeks. Do a search on Google and you will find more info. Steve

That's known as electrolysis, something with which I have a fair amount of knowledge from my electronic background (US Army Signal Corps, ham radio licenses, electrical engineering in my first two years of college) and from working my way through college as an auto mechanic, then as a marine mechanic as I built up my wildlife consulting business. Sacrificial anodes (usually made of zinc) are absolutely necessary in marine environments, even on battleships to prevent electrolysis. Since these new Jeep radiators have plastic supports and end pieces, they aren't susceptible to electrolysis except on the copper/zinc vanes which are grounded to the chassis. I actually suspect the problem originates from the mechanic(s) who installed the two new radiators and over-torqued the mounting screws cracking the plastic cases; thermal expansion and contraction did the rest.
