For those of us unfamiliar with the Australian coins...what's wrong with the date?

harrison2: A genuine Australian 1930 penny at auction in F-VF will realise typically in the region of AUD $30,000 at auction.

A genuine (pattern only) 1937 penny, with standard obverse and reverse could realise between $1/4 and 1/2 million at auction. Even the uniface patterns are excessively rare. I have never seen one.

It probably started life as a 1936, but had the 6 turned into a 0. Makes a hole in a collection go away, but wouldn't fool many people these days. The 0 just looks wrong.

For $415? You're kiddin'!

I would buy a 1930 hole filler forgery for no more than 5 bucks. Ptui!

it was described as -
"Australia 1930 Key Date Bronze Penny Album Filler Coin",
and further down is this note -
Date: 1930 (altered date)

Last year, a dealer was selling them for $10 - your choice of a sickeningly shiny, almost brassy patina, or a pleasing chocolate.

But this one went for -
Bid history: 24 bids
Winning bid: AU $415.00 (Approximately US $445.21)

Fools and their money ...

oh well I'm glad that my 1930 - genuine, of course - is safely locked up:

The winning bidder - and presumably several of the underbidders - presumably hoped to on-sell it as genuine, and make a profit. It's the only reason I can think of why anyone would pay that much for a bogus coin.
