So I made my first purchase off of HSN for the below product: http://www.hsn.com/collectibles/199...&o=&ocm=seisIt was kind of one of those on the spot purcahses without doing much research. I'm a bit leary of buying plated coins and not sure if it actually does anything for the numismatic value over time. It sure does look pretty though and I belive it was a good buy. Something else I can hand off to my little one when she gets older... So what say all you wiser collectors out there, good buy or not? Reason?

I say get your money back ASAP! Those coins have ZERO value to collectors. NEVER buy coins from HSN or any TV show....pure robbery.

Oh boy, HSN is the red-headed orphan stepchild on this forum. You have just opened a can of worms... I'll leave it to the more seasoned veterans of this board to comment. As for your buy, see if you can cancel your purchase before your credit card is charged.

Yeash.....so why do you say they have zero value? because they are gold plated?
I really do like the show value of the set....I did already purcahse it and HSN does have a return policy. I think I'll see it before I send it back....

Unfortunately, you just paid over $200 for coins that are worth only their face value, which in this case is $28.00. Quote: I'm a bit leary of buying plated coins and not sure if it actually does anything for the numismatic value over time. Plating does nothing positive to any numismatic value. It is viewed as post-Mint damage and ruins the numismatic value of any coin.

Sorry buddy, but like the other poster said, they will never be worth more then their face value. And the amount of gold used in gold plating these is so minimal, it doesn't add up to the price you paid. And you can hold these coins for 50 years and you'll still not be able to recover the cost of it, let alone the added interest you should earn in 50 years. If you want a State Quarters collection, I say go to ebay and spend $50-$70 on an Uncirculated set (non gold clad). Or if you want other ideas for investing your $200 in coins, just ask, I am sure many people here will be able to help you out. Edit: And sorry you won't like this either, just found my other post where we talked about this same set: https://goccf.com/t/88150

get a refund, those aren't worth anything but face value.

Like the others have said, they have no collector/numismatic value above their face value and 99.9% likely never will. Collectors see them as damages coins and the gold value is nominal to say the least. If you like them though and want to display them, and are ok with what you paid, then that's fine too. I think we are just informing you that they aren't worth nearly what you bought them for and never will be, so don't think of them as an investment.

Like I said, I went on a whim when purchasing...lesson learned here.... I'll be sure to ask the wiser bunch before jumping into something like that again. So my decision is to let the product arrive and I'll take a look at the show value....if I like it I'll keep it. In my opinion, not every coin has to have some type of value. As long as I like it, I'm good with it. I did make a stupid mistake but in turn I did get smarter today!

When ever you buy something you want to increase in numismatic premium, think about how much other collectors might like it. Is the gold-plated coin market popular? Not really. Of course you may not know that, but if you want to buy the coins as a gift for yourself or someone else, go ahead. I have a goldplated quarter I bought a few years back because I thought it was cool. If you like what you buy, than keep it. But if you are looking to have the item rise in value, think of what's hot and not mass produced.

Gold plated quarters are cool just because they look so different from the norm. I think the plating on them is super super thin so there is very little gold value in the coin. The $200 you paid could be argued as being the value you see in having a complete set in a nice box with the individual encapsulation. I don't know how well it would play out as an investment but if you like it then that's OK.
I got one of these quarters in the mail back in the late 90s. It was from a get rich quick promotion during the booming dot com era.

Yeah, I never buy anything on TV, I remember back in the mid 1990s Star Wars Special Edition hit theaters. All stores had a lot of rare collectiables you don't see to often. I got a Boba Fett 12inch collectable model figure I guess you could call it for for $29.99 as a gift around the holidays. I saw the same exact thing on QVC or HSN, I don't remember which shopping channel it was, but they wanted $59.99 for it. I got my at Suncoast for a lot less. Let not forget about those collectable Obama quarters.....

While everyone else has already said this, I don't think it can be stated enough: get a refund!!
The case itself is worth about $50 and is the only thing I like about the product. You can find a case like it online and fill it up with your own quarters for less than half the price. Sure they won't be gold plated, but all the better for it. The value of that gold is negligible.
Even if you do love the set, get a refund anyway so that you aren't supporting such a scam artist.

Well, if it's any consolation, the quarters will always be worth a quarter, and will pass through any vending machine given that level of gilding is negligible to make a difference in weight. If you like the set and keep it, that's fine too. From a layman's point of view, it is a pretty set with the wooden presentation case, and you could always get a table at a flea market, and sell the darn thing to someone even less interested in numismatics for more than $100...the exact kind of buyer HSN looks for. Their motto: find the person with more money than sense.

LOL....Bizy,well they surely did find me! So this is how it went: I'm laying in bed in a hotel room due to a business trip in Steamboat Springs,CO. Board with all the mumbo jumbo on TV I started watching HSN and of course they had there one hour coin special on. First time I ever watched it consistently...I got the itch, picked up the phone and the rest is history! Then I talked to you all today and the came on.... How ironic being I work for the largest lighting manufacturer in the world.....
