Found this the other day. Thought it was pretty cool. I go through about 2000-2500 halves a week. Yes, nickels & pennies too.... it's a sickness. ;)

More than likely polished off to fix a die clash. Check the reverse, you can often see the outline of his head in the letters of "HALF DOLLAR" if the bridge of the nose is gone.

I too saw that one one the mercury and from similar images and responses on this forum I agree with the last comment.
