Here may be a noob question...

If coin cleaning is taboo, why is it that you see coin cleaning product floating around?

Because they can sell the solution to noobs :) Or someone can buy it and sell the cleaned coins to noobs at markups... I'm sure there is a small actual need for the solution (there are rare instances where the coin is so ugly the cleaning is better), but it's definitely used incorrectly more often than not.

As a general rule "don't clean coins"

Because problem coins exist. The problem is most people end up ruining a perfectly good coin by improperly cleaning it. There can be exceptions to the rule of "don't clean coins". Each coin and technique must be evaluated on a case by case basis.

A simple answer is if you have something to sell, someone will usually buy it. There are many products on the market that are, or should be, not even there but if not illigal, why not. Ever watch HSN on TV? They have had items on there that I just laughed at and if true, they sell thousands of them.
Someone I know tends to buy almost anything advertised on TV. I asked why since he doesn't use most of them. His only answer was it looked like a great deal.

Thanks for the response all....

So the bottom line is that it's a ploy.

Absolutely not. It's called buisness. If you picked up a pile of dirt outside and put it up for sale, eventually someone or many would buy that.
Ask around. There are always people that buy things and don't even know why.
