I heard that a rule of thumb for modern star notes is that they are worth twice face value, as long as they are in CU condition.

They must be in CU condition and must be kept that way for the rest of their existence. Here are two examples of someone not taking care of their notes.

These were in my bosses mother's collection. They were played with and folded and messed with for years and sat in a metal index card box. Now they are worth maybe $2. If they would have put them in a book or some safe place they could be worth so much more.

Oh man a 1953-C That would be a very nice star note to have if in better shape I do have one I In better but still not Unc which is always what you are looking for. Also Consecutive numbers STARS at least 8-12 in a row Is what to shoot for . I would say The doulbe estimate is close to accurate in the smaller denominations

Yep jim, my heart just about bounced off the floor when I pulled that out of the little tin box. I couldn't believe it. Then I realized just how bad a shape it was in and now I don't know if it is even worth $2 at the bank. I don't know if they will let you cash in something that old.

i don't think they have a choice if it is/was legal tender
they accept a bill as long as you have more than half
