I have decided to finally finish my penny collection I started as a kid. I am willing to do what it takes and get serious now about finally completing this collection BUT I have decided that I want to make this something I can hand down when the time is right.

My Lincoln set starts at 1909 and it consists of roughly 90% circulated coinage. I want to conserve these before I set them all into my recently aquired Dansco Album 8100. My Uncircs will go straight into the album as they should last forever or so I hope.

Since the other 90% are circulated would it be a bad idea to dip each one in Acetone in order to preserve if from any possible further corrosion?

I have never cleaned any of these cents. My hope is that it will get passed on and updated by whomever in the family has it at that time. So I would like to make sure these cents last as long as possible in this album.

Heck I really have no idea what I am doing at this point, I never gave this much thought but I would like to pass something down that I have enjoyed ever since I was a kid. I've always stored them in my Whitmann folder and never once gave conservation and passing it on much if any thought until I noticed my youngest has a VERY strong interest in coins when he helps me search rolls.

Im pushin 40 so I have plenty of time to get the few I am missing and complete this. Sorry for the long post, but this is really sitting on my mind alot as of late.

Good question - I'll be interested to see what others have to say on this as I have a similar collection of Lincoln cents.
I have never used acetone or anything to clean any of my coins up to this point.

The BEST way to preserve your coins is let your youngest start and manage his / her own collection. That way, they will take an interest in caring for their collection, and eventually, in the fullness of time, your collection, too.

When my sister was a kid I gave her a few moderate value starter coins but I did NOT direct her collecting preferences in any way. I made sure that if she wanted a particular coin, she would have to earn it, but it was hers, and hers alone. She has developed her own collection for over 30 years now. Would you believe I also started my mother collecting! My sister and myself split her collection, which was valued at some thousands, out of her estate.

Just don't be overbearing if they develop a different collecting direction to yourself. See if it is possible to get your other kids interested. That way, you can split your collection evenly when you eventually kick the bucket.

For encouragement, I suggest that you may have to provide the best storage you consider viable for the their collection. The bulk of my collection is in 2 x 2 cardboard Mylar holders in ring binder albums.

I use acetone for conservation. Removes all the corrosive water. If they have any verdigris...look at Badthads product verdicare. Just keep in mind "conserve" don't "clean". BTW, I'm in the same boat. Lookin to pass something down to my daughter..

To many items to consider first.
1. Do you have anyone that really wants your coins? I mention that since I've been a coin collector for over 60 years and no one around that wants them. No relatives interested in coins at all.
2. Keep an eye on your kids to see if in the future any interest in coins. Present day kids are way to interested in computerized games to think about coins. Coins just sit there and don't shoot at anybody.
3. If you want to preserve your coins for the future, simply do nothing to them except seal the Album in a Zip Lock Plastic Bag. Push out as much air as possible and close. I've been doing that since they were first made and all coins still look the same as the day I put them in there.
3. Start a second Album and eventually put the best of both in Album #1 and next best in #2. I started that a long time ago and now up to #10 with #1 being almost all MS.
4. Regardless of what you do with your Albums and coins, always check to see if any high humidity in the area. If so, find ways to either move them or get rid of the humidity.
5. Either go on line or see an attorney for a will that stipulates what is to become of the coins.

JustCarl

I do believe my youngest son will be interested in collecting coins. He loves to roll search looking for what he calls the shiny ones. He also likes to look at my collection when I bring them out.

I have a total of 3 whitman books of wheats and memorials, but again, these are 90% circulated coinage. I understand you do not want to do anything at all to coins that are uncirc, red, proof etc. Those should preserve well enough by themselves once they are in the Dansco. I am more wondering about the ones that are circulated, some are keys yes but circulated none the less. Those are NOT ok to dip in acetone to preserve them?

I live in WI so humidity is part of life for me, I dont have the resources or money to do anything climate controlled. Best I can do is keep them in my safe with my Silica packs and golden rod and hope for the best.

If I do upgrade some of my cents, I will be buying Uncirc and simply put them straight into the album with no acetone preservation or anything. Its my circulated cents, am I going to be commiting a grave mistake by doing that to them simply intending to preserve them from further corrosion should I never have a chance to upgrade them?

Thank you everyone for the replies so far.
