I've never seen the $500 bill. When I was a kid I did see the $1000 bill. Parents closed out all of their accounts when a local bank got purchased and moved to a new one. The bank gave them like 6 $1000 bills.

From talking with my old teller friend the banks don't use them anymore for transactions. Think only the Fed banks use them now. Blame the electronic banking age.

When I worked for Coca-Cola they did the "Magic Can" promotion back in 1990. You could win real cash from a can of Coke. They used bills from $1 to $500, rolled them into a tight circle so when you opened the can the bill would pop out of the opening. They picked workers from plants across the US to go and make the cans. I didn't get to go, but one of my friends from the plant in Dallas did. He saw the $500 bills they used and he even got to keep a can with $1 in it.

Coke had problems with the can and a family sued when their son drank a can filled with water that the pop-up and bill had broken loose inside. It didn't hurt anyone, but Coke had to take out full page ads in papers across the country telling the public that if they had a can with "foul tasting water" inside, not to drink it.

All I could think of was the value of the $500 bills being lost to collectors by rolling it up and damaging it.

Never seen a $500, but I have friend that bought two $1000 bills and a $5000 bill several years ago (at face value from a banker his wife worked for). I hooked him up with a dealer I know and sent the $5000 off for grading. When it came back, the dealer offered him $66,000 on the spot. There are just a couple hundred graded out there. He is holding out for $80,000.

very rare to find them at all in circulation! I'm sure someone uninformed may bring one in from time to time!
