I was wondering if anyone knew what the name for the 25 cent 1874H "3Vs in Canada" variety was, and if anyone had ever seen one in an ICCS or CCCS flip.

The variety was discovered recently (2006?) and is the result of a "V" punch used in "CANADA" on the obverse, with the crossbar hand scribbled in very weakly afterwards. In the first "A" of CANADA, the crossbar cant even be seen. Its a bit stronger in the 2nd A and strongest in the 3rd A.

Has anyone seen these at auction, and do they get a premium? I may have discovered a few and wondering if its worth getting them CCCS'd, and what to even call them :).

I don't know what they're called, but I don't believe an inverted V punch was used.I have a number of these and it appears to be a progressive thing possibly due to plugged crossbars in the A's.

Plugged crossbars in all As of Canada, but no other A anywhere else, on any other coin of the entire mintage? Seems highly unlikely...

You will note, that the foot of the As in CANADA is smaller than the As in the rest of the coin (and equivalent in size to the "V" in VICTORIA).

If the scribed in crossbar theory were true every coin from the same die would have identical weak crossbars, even in low grades because they are well protected from wear. The crossbars vary from merely weak to vitually absent, something not too exiting is the cause, and thus they've lost their lustre and aren't mentioned in recent catalogues or price guides.
