echizento Moderator United States 23731 Posts	Posted 05/19/2011 11:45 pm to the community The only example of a denarius with this reverse I can find does not have the same obverse legend and is listed in RIC vol 1 #47. It could be an unlisted type. I see what looks like some dark areas on the obverse which could be bronze under the silver. This might be a fouree. Report this Post to the Staff

Sap Moderator Australia 16872 Posts	Posted 05/20/2011 09:05 am A "fouree", which is what this coin appears to be, is a type of circulating counterfeit ancient coin, made back in ancient times. It was made by wrapping a layer of silver around a blank copper or brass slug, then striking the "sandwich" with hand-made fake dies - or perhaps with genuine coin dies that have been "borrowed" from the mint workshop. The odd "cracks" around the reverse certainly look like a layer of foil that's peeling away. Fourees are antique artefacts in their own right and certainly collectable, though I have no idea what they sell for these days. Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis Report this Post to the Staff
