I have an 1844 Mexican 8 Real struck at Chihuahua. My world coins book lists an 1844/1 with a little higher value along with the regular 1844. What do I have here, normal or an overdate?

Hello Amigo 14ers

According to one of the leading books on this subject, (RESPLANDORES Cap and Rays 8 Reales of the republic of Mexico 1823-1897 by Dunnigan and Parker), the 1844 CA RG is considered Scarce. Also it states that for varieties, there are no known major varities. It also addresses that many catalogs list an 1844/1 b, of course this leaves it open for future interpretation, its authors believe that the last "4" is a repunched "4" making it look like a 4/1. The book only lists 1 image or example of 1844 CA RG.

From the image, I can see why many list it as a 4/1. The base of the 4 looks just as thick as the 1, while the 1st 4 is thinner.

This is an interesting area with so many possibilities.

If you follow the RESPLENDORES authors, you have the normal type.

Sometimes the dedicated books might have the better answer, and sometimes the folks here are just as great.

I was going to quote "Resplandores" also since it is the primary reference dedicated to the Cap & Rays but fcrazo beat me to it! :)

Looks like you have a nice coin!
