On a lot of Asian notes (and maybe others I don't know), they have a letter over the top of a number in front of the main serial number. Can anyone tell me what this is for?

It's just a prefix if I'm not mistaken. Nice note you got there triggersmob - I don't think it's an easy note to find.

As well as, I don't think most Modern Asian notes use such numbering system anymore. In the past, Malaysia and Singapore used to do that but both don't do that any longer, perhaps because it's just too difficult to read.

Yup, it's just a different, old-fashioned sort of way of setting out the prefix letters/numbers. I suppose it allowed for more flexibility; if you ended up printing an awful lot of notes, you could easily extend either the top letters or bottom numbers to two or even more characters without re-working the whole layout of the serial numbers.

Australian predecimal banknotes have the same feature.
