Afternoon all. Can anybody help in identifying the date in which this coin is likely to have been produced? As it differs from the other George II half guineas I have seen I am assuming it is an early production. Fake? Or am I being a bit simple and is it a one guinea (I am rather new to this game and it looks like it says half...)? Thanks for any help!
I would assume that it's a "coin weight" - something intended to be used to weigh a coin on a balance; the "w" would be abbreviation for "weight". Does it weigh the same as a half-guinea (4.175 grams)?
Coin weights are collectable in their own right - I was at a coin show earlier today and saw a dealer with a trayful of similar items; he was asking $30 to $100 for them.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis
Thanks! I was wondering why I couldn't find anything about this. I would never have guessed it was a coin weight! Guess I still have rather a lot to learn. Still very interesting and thanks for your swift response!
