Hey everybody as you can see I'm new to the game. I am wondering what I need to help me examine coins with. I know I can look up on where I need to look on the coin but what is the best thing I can use to look. I see there are scanners, hand mag glass, camera's, microscopes that hook up to your computer I'm not sure which one would be the best and that I could examine a coin.

Also is a scale a good source too to help with coins?

Thanks!!

I have a 10X Monocular microscope I bought about 5 yrs ago, easier than a loop, you can see the full coin, up to a nickel, also a usb microscope that hooks up to my computer, this helps me with varieties/errors. Also a scanner to take pics to put in my inventory system. Last, a cheap ( $150.00) Camera to take pics with, but a little hard for me to get the right shot, maybe you can do better. Hope this helps.

I forgot, A scale is important, helps detecting counterfeits, all weights for coins are in the Red Book, Calipers are good to have also.

Get yourself a 10X loupe also. Education is key. I would get yourself an Official ANA Grading Standards for United States coins book. Great learning tool. As for a camera, make sure it has macro zoom, most of your Canons, Nikons, Olympus etc., have this feature. I really like my Olympus. Very easy to use and takes very decent pictures.

I agree, the 10x loupe is really handy. The scale also. But knowledge is key, as previously stated. A Red Book will help, and perhaps a copy of Photograde.

I just got a new one for 11.00$....not that expensive. Remember, go for quality, I see some on ebay for 5.00$ that probably aren't worth a darn.

I have a 10x loupe that I got with a tattoo kit when I first started doing tattoos but I find myself using the eye p[art of an old microscope more often than the 10x loupe because it is probably closer to 30 or 40x magnification. But if you can find an old broken microscope and just steal the eye from it I can tell you it works great
