I hold on to anything prior to 1970. This is what I found today while looking through $40 worth of rolls....

Yeah, those 64's are just a hot mess of quantity. During my nickel roll searches I was trying to explain to my wife about just how many 1964's I was finding (I initially kept them too and sorta still analyze them for a DD). Anywho, she has absolutely no interest in coins and by listing off numbers she was very unimpressed until I showed her the ginormous pile of 1964 rejects. I'd say, on average, I get about 3 rolls of 1964 for every box searched. EESH!

i agree with rachums107. but if you do keep up to 1970, then at least don't keep the 1964. They are so extremely common and will probably never be worth more than face value until like the year 20150 when jeffersons are hard to find. It is not uncommon to find a 1964 in every roll.

Thanks for the input, guys. I guess I will cut it down to no later than 1963. Also, I did not find a single 2009 in the whole lot! Why is that? It is the only date in my entire nickel collection that I do not have, and the hole is killin' me.

I have only found 2 in 12 boxes, but I threw them back. Low mintage I think. And with that mintage, everyone pulls them from circulation.

I can't believe you only found 26 total P/D 1964's In my area I would have gotten 1&1/2 - 2 rolls of those out of 20 rolls of nicks.

Wow. that many? I am relatively new to the whole roll searching thing myself. Is it rare to pick up 1939's? I was soo excited I about fell out of my chair when I saw it...

As far as old Jefferson nickels go, the '39 with no mintmark is one of the most common. Be sure to check them for their doubled die varieties! The 39-D and 39-S however are two of the rarest in the series. |

I got really lucky and managed to find an 1939 D in my change that I think is at least AU50. This happened around a year ago. Thought it was a '59 D at first glance. But then I saw the 3 and I was   |

Don't be too fast at tossing back those 64D's. At least not until you check for RPMs, DDRs, and the now infamous "E PLURIDUS UNUM". Also 1 in 2,000 has 5 full steps.

Ok here is the BIG update!  After $60 more worth of nickels (50 total rolls) My finds are as follows.... 1939 - 3 (+2) 1940 - 1 1941 - 1 (+1) 1944 P - 1 (+1)  My first silver nickel! 1946 - 1 1947 - 1 (+1) 1947 D - 1 (+1) 1948 - 1 1951 D - 1 (+1) 1951 S - 1 (+1) 1952 D - 1 (+1) 1953 D - 3 (+1) 1954 D - 3 (+2) 1955 D - 2 (+2) 1956 - 3 (+2) 1956 D - 2 (+2) 1957 - 1 1957 D - 1 (+1) 1958 D - 4 (+3) 1959 D - 3 (+2) Total: 35 *I have decided to reject dates 1960 and later. I guess I will make this a running thread for those who are interested. I will continue posting my finds. I have it so you can see how much $$$ I went through each update and the total number of rolls searched. In the data field you can see how many total coins for each date I have found, and by how much each has increased. Edited by ancientcoinguy

Appreciate you sharing your finds ... and by all means please continue updating as you see fit and have the energy to do so. Do know that there is a nickel searching thread where we all contribute our finds ... Sooo ... you are now through 1 box of USA nickels ... 50 rolls ... $200 worth. Great start on your roll find adventure.  To help calibrate if I may ... I am also a nickel roll searcher and keep all finds 1959 and earlier ... I note you have 35 of these in your first box. My average find rate for 1959 and prior nickels ... after 244,000 coins searched ... is 26.3 per $100 box. Your 1951-S is a great find ... original mintage of 7.8 million coins makes this the #6 lowest mintage of the Jefferson series ... I have found 5 of these at an average find rate of one every 48,800 coins searched. Pleased for you for your first ever War Silver Jefferson ... the 44-P is the most commonly found of these tough to score coins from circulation ... I find a War Silver on average every 2842 coins searched. Hoping you get bit by the nickel bug ... buy yourself a folder or album to store them ... and join me and several other CCF members in our quest to complete the entire circulation strike series from bank rolls. Yeah I am aware of the other Nickel thread...I am using this one as a personal tracker that others may follow if they want. Every once in a while I will scoot on over to your thread and add my 5 cents worth, like every 5 boxes or so.
I believe I have indeed been bitten by the nickel bug!
