I have heard of some people still doing this. Does anyone know if it is still possible? My bank said they can't order anything of a higher denomintation besides half dollars (unless I want the "gold" dollars).

Is anyone getting Ikes from their bank or know how which banks can get them in? Thanks!

I get them occasionally, but only when customers deposit them at banks. Every so often ill find a branch where someone has deposited a hundred or so and i'll buy them up but most of the time is just one or two in a teller tray. At one point I had about 1300 of them saved up, but lately I've been selling them off on the ebay. Supposedly banks can order them from the fed, but most large banks will refuse to order them for you (they have to fill out special forms and pay delivery fees ect). A collector I know once managed to get two bags ordered and was able to pull a pair of 40% ikes. Out of ~ 1300 I've found 3 72p type 2's, 2 1974s 40%, 1 1973d, 2 morgans (1899 o and 1880 p), two Peace dollars (1922p and 1935p), and even a 1986 silver eagle. Thats one silver coin every 186 dollars or so.

You just have to ask everytime you go to your bank....but they usually just get one or two at a time. Just depends on what other customers deposit. The most I have ever found at one bank was 10.

I found two banks with 60 each and one with 125. I have saved a total of 350 in circulation so far.

I got aproximately half of them as a teller and half just roaming around to different banks. As a teller the biggest group I once consisted of about $360 worth and as just a customer the most I've received at once was $300 worth. Usually a branch will ship out any ikes they have to their logistics company once they have a few hundred of them so its generally hard to find large numbers at any one time.

I would suggest trying banks that have coin machines since they are more likely to draw customers depositing coins than branches that dont have coin machines.

I've gotten ~600 from circulation in the last year, but XavierOfGreen's averages are much better than mine. I have 1 72 Type 2 and 3 FEVs. No 73s and no silver. Largest stash was $475 that the branch I order nickels from practically begged me to take. I also find a lot at grocery stores - in the in- store banks and at customer service. I pretty much by any Ike, half or $2 bill even if I know it's junk. Ask enough times, and they'll start holding stuff for you if you're nice to them.

A regional bank by me can order them from the FED. I just got in 2 bags last week and sold them! I am eligible to sell and will be happy to help out fellow forum members.
Rest in Peace

Some of the megabanks have them kicking around in their vault, simply because no one asked.

Got about $650 from banks and dumped them all at fast food, shopping and gas stations. "Sold" a few rolls to a guy at face value. He sells them at his flea market table for $2.

As others have noted, I've only found Ikes at banks after someone else had deposited them. Most of the ones I've found have been Bicentennials, but I found a clad '73-S proof once. The Ikes are usually kept in an envelope with the amount written on it.

I keep asking for large dollars in hopes that I'll find a Morgan or a Peace dollar one day.
