How do you fix a dollar that had a gold loop mounted to the back to mount to a chain? Can a jewler remove it without melting the coin? The coin is a AU coin and I paid $75 for it and think without this little piece it will grade alot better.

It will always have a details grade as even the best jewelers wont' be able to remove all aspects of the mount. But it's still a great pickup for that price, a little more than melt, but not too bad at all.

I agree, they may be able to remove most of it without doing more damage to the coin but chances are pretty slim that they would be able to get all of it off making it a problem free piece. This would always be considered a ex-jewelery piece and would not grade as problem free

Why not sell it and buy another one without the mount? Those jewelry pieces seem to go for a premium anyway from what I've seen on ebay.

Here is the problem as I see it- the coin with the mount removed will probably have a max value of $150-200. You paid $75 for it and a competent jeweler/coin repairer would probably charge $100 or more to carefully remove the mount without major damage to the coin. This is not a task for your average neighborhood jeweler. With that kind of expenditure, it would have been better to buy a problem-free coin in the first place. There is very good reason why ex-jewelry coins are greatly devalued- once ex-jewelry, always ex-jewelry and there is nothing you can do to hide it.
