Hello I bought this nice China Coin. It is Listed in the Krause Catalog of Unusual Coins. As X# M15 5 Mace (1/2 Tael). The coin is made of silver. Does someone know how rare this coin is? What is the value of this coin? I am grateful for each estimation. regards nuno2646 Edited by nuno2646 05/25/2011 11:58 am

Just about every chinese coin that comes on here is fake, I am no expert so I cannot say, but the fakes I see in china have a lot of dirt similar to that!

G'day & welcome, I agree with Augs' - these have been counterfeited in great quantities in recent years. check the weight, and run a magnet over it. Let us know the results.

I have to say, it's never occurred to me to look in UWC for examples of these Chinese reproductions. I don't know how to tell a "fake KMX#M15" from a genuinely antique coin, but your coin is not actually KMX#M15. The bottom inscription on your coin is incorrect, it says "treasury standard weight half tael". The bottom inscription on the example pictured as KMX#M15 is different; it says "treasury standard weight five mace". Your coin is identical to this one on zeno.ru which a member there bought as a fake in Singapore for $1. I strongly suspect that your coin is not actual silver, and does not weigh half a tael (18.9 grams).

Did Canton ever make half tael coins? Looked on some Chinese sites and they all seem to say there were no 1/2 taels, and this is a new type-counterfeit. http://7788qb.997788.com/bbs/show_3...____1_1.htmlQuote:
First post: Coin is 3.4cm diameter, 0.1cm thick, 13.3g. After consulting many books I haven't been able to find this type. I'd appreciate everyone's comments!
2nd: A rare is around 60k RMB, but this one is a new type of fake
3rd: My god, with this kind of new counterfeit, I'm never going to collect coins again, but also no end to the types I can collect!
4th: Dangerous!
This wasn't the only site that returned with I searched for "Canton province, kuping half tael" but they all seem to say the same thing. Where did you buy it? I don't have the unusuals catalog. Does it really match what you have? **argh! Beat me to it! Once again I to your infinite knowledge!

First I buyed in a Philately Store. This was in the description:
Kwang-Tung Kuang-hsu 1875/1908 (AR) 1875-1908 1/2 Tael 1904 "Fantasy TARLS" (KANN-B35)
Is this a modern counterfeit? Or a Fantasy Coin that was made between 1875-1908? Or just a fake of the Fantasy Coin?
I cant find the coin in the Unusual Catalog.

Looked again, and there doesn't seem to be any "half-tael" coins from Canton. From all the ones similar to yours I've seen on Chinese auction sites, they seem to be modern strikes.

"Kann" was a catalogue of Chinese coins put out in 1950, just after the Communist takeover. The coin listed as Kann B35 is the same as the coin in UWC KMX#M15, with "five mace" in the legend, not "half tael". On that basis I would assume that your coin is a modern fantasy.

Thank you for help. I hope it could be some fantasy coin that was made in the same period like the Kann B35 coin. If its a modern fantasy coin it doesn't have any numismatic value.
What is if I send the coin to a grading service like NGC or ICG?

If it's not in Krause, and not in Kann, then I doubt they would grade it. It would most likely come back as "questionable authenticity".
