Hi Is this coin supposed to be in the coin die orientation as opposed to the medal position ? Starting to go through a canadian coin collection that I got from my step dad and just happened to notice it on this particular coin. Also, coin is in the f/vf range and was wondering if any kind of premium. Will most likely be bugging all on this forum in the near future as far as cents, nickels, dimes, halfs etc. Mostly silver ones (except for the cents:) Also need to refresh my memory on any varieties etc. on all denominations so to keep an eye open for such as I go along. Maybe some suggestions about that also. Thanks.

Canada had a coinage axis until our mint opened in 1908.The 1870 was the first year for the 25 cent denomination. In fine it ranges from $65-$600 and VF $135- $1200.Depending on the obverse die.Pics are a good idea as we tend to grade a tad different up in the north country.

Thanks. Not a bad start for the first coin/quarter. I will post a few scans as my pics. are not that great. Hope they will get it in the ballpark anyway. A fair U.S. grade would be F12/15. So I will wait and see. Interesting range of prices for one grade. Curious, if your mint did not open until 1908 where were the older coins minted ? Or were they all smuggled in from Great Britain :)

They were made in the UK at both the Royal and Heaton's (aka Birmingham Mint), the latter denoted by an H mint mark on the coins.
While I have a complete decimal collection, coins minted in Canada for Canada are my primary personal interest and I like the effort that went into the production here.

Oh ya, now I remember with the H on a lot of the large one cents that I had over the years. Also on new brunswick cents I believe. I think this is the oldest of the quarters that I have but will start working on the others. I'll just get together a list of the years etc. and post those first. will do the same on the dimes, nickels, halfs etc. Scans not bad. Detail a little better in hand but coin is worn some. Thanks again. http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums.../1870obv.jpghttp://i1020.photobucket.com/albums.../1870rev.jpg

Hi
Thank you. Guess I need to bone up on canadian grading. Curious, what would be the minimum criteria for a VG8, 10, and F12 ? on can. quarters ?

Yes, thanks. That helps much. These quarters must have much tougher rims/strikes than most. I see that they stand up quite well compared to the devices. With coin in hand seems to be a tad closer to an 8 than a 6. Either way not bad for a silver quarter. Learned a bit also.

I had to add a custom filter to block that pig avatar Tam . Not sure what it's supposed to represent but I don't get good vibes from it.
