Can someone tell me how often you find quarters from the 1992, 1999, and 2000 sets in change up there in Canada? I noticed some have a very low mintage. I'm starting out a Canadian 20th century type collection, and I am wondering if my best bet is just to buy the $15 sets on ebay or if I should wait and pull them out of rolls. Thanks for the help!

1999 and 2000 are very common to find in change. January 1999 is a lot tougher to find but it can be purchased easily for a couple of dollars. As for the 1992 set they can be found in circulation but not very often and trying to put together as set of those out of circulation would be very difficult. As a collector every time I find any of these coins I keep them and put in rolls. I have many sets from circulation but I have not been able to find all the 1992 set from circulation. I have had to buy those sets. These coins are much nicer in high grades and the sets are still affordable. I would recommend that you buy the the 1992 set and try to find the others out of circulation. Also don't forget it was the 1992 set that inspired the US mint to issue the State Quarters, which in turn increased the number of coin collectors and then in turn help raise the price of numismatic grade American coins.

With the RCM alloy recover program in full force, 1992's and 1999's 25 cent coins are getting very hard to find in circulation. Most quarters in circulation now are 2000 and above. The mint has been retiring pre-2000 "nickel" coins for scrap metal and replacing them with steel core with nickel plating coins .

with soooerdad. Sets are still relatively inexpensive right now. You will enjoy collecting from change knowing that you have the complete set to fall back on.

The approach to take depends on whether you care if the coin is a business strike (from a circulation roll), or numismatic BU/prooflike from a set. If you're strictly a business strike collector, you'd want to keep digging from change, or buy from someone who's cracked a circulation roll.

I'm still getting 1999's and 2000's in change frequently. 1992's are very infrequent.

Thanks for the information everybody. I think I will try to pick them up off of ebay, and then I will see what I can do with circulation like Uncle Al suggested.

Agreed that the January 1999 is hard to find in circulation. I had to purchase it for 50 cents back in the day (the seller was quite thrilled). To this day I still only have that one and only quarter, not counting the proof-like set. Everything else, though, is pretty common to find except for the mules and die rotations. I still find 1999s all the time among the 2000s. 1992 is a different story, though. They're not always easy to find.
