Sorry but this is damage. It was squeezed together between two other pennies. Also, welcome to the forum!

Some do that with a hammer and several coins. Since Copper and Zinc are so soft, those are easy to make.

How would you spot the difference between something like this and a similar mint error?

If struck twice by the die, the lettering wouldn't be backwards.

plus, it wouldn't have 2 reverses without 2 obverses.

I used to make these at the gas station I worked at on rain nights haha
I would smash all kinds of coins on the floor with a hammer making a whole register of 2 sided pennies, penny/dime mixes
you name it coin wise and I smashed them together
after I checked the coins for anything I wanted that is
people always got excited when they received change like that from me.

As the others said, it's just a damaged coin...what we call PMD (Post Mint Damage). This is most ofter refered to as a "vise job".

This was altered after it left the Mint. There are some famous 1963's and 1969's just like it.
